One area that is in its infancy stages is Augmented Reality (AR) through Google Glass, gaming and awesome apps for astronomy. Expectations are high for AR capabilities, which allows users to see additional information layered over what they see through the lens. Currently, access to AR technology for educational use is mostly limited to smartphone and tablet apps.
Virtual Field Trips are possible with AR technology. Using Google Glass, a teacher can stream from a remote location to their classroom thousands of miles away or if students are participating in an online classroom they can access the field trip at any hour of the day. This is one example of how educators are moving away from the traditional classroom

Heather,
ReplyDeleteYou make an excellent point - there are some high expectations for the future of AR! I think it is becoming natural to the way young people consume information. For example, I was watching a DVD the other day (in and of itself a somewhat dated thing to do nowadays) and realized that I was bored just sitting there doing one thing. I found a special feature on the DVD that layered informational text over the movie which gave information about the filming process, trivia, and other tidbits as I watched the DVD. I found the media much more captivating when I added this second layer of information. I think our brains are changing in fundamental ways. What do you think?
Hi Heather,
ReplyDeleteI was browsing the Internet to find information regarding AR and stumbled across this website: http://www.twoguysandsomeipads.com/p/meaningful-integration.html
These two guys have organized quite a few ideas regarding integration of AR into education. The ideas span across various areas of education and they appear to be fairly easy and actually achievable.
Additionally, here is a link to a TedX video where Brad Gustafson discusses how to get students ready for the real world and he includes AR as a useful tool.

I hope these sites spark interest to you and provide a connection to AR and how to incorporate it into your field.
